Blackpool Tower Lights

The world-famous Blackpool Tower is today showcasing a brand-new set of illuminations which are guaranteed to wow visitors this year.

Every single one of the iconic landmark’s 5,752 light bulbs has been replaced for the first time in 10-years – a mammoth task which has seen its expert team clocking up more than 4,000 abseiling hours to complete.

The makeover means the Tower will be lit up in a choice of 21 colours and Tower chiefs believe it promises to be one of the best-ever years!

Kenny Mew, general manager at The Blackpool Tower, said: “This is the first time in more than two years that we’ve been able to have lights on all four sides of the Tower and, even more impressive, the first time in 10 years that every single light node has been replaced. It promises to be a fantastic year and bring lots of smiles to faces. What we love to do!

“We’re absolutely thrilled to be unveiling a brand new look and it’s particularly poignant for us after the events of this year so far – everyone needs fun and entertainment at the moment, and we’re hoping that The Blackpool Tower helps inject a feeling of hope and joy among our new and returning visitors.”

Cllr Gillian Campbell, Cabinet Member for Tourism & Culture for Blackpool Council, said: “This latest investment in The Blackpool Tower is part of our long-term strategy to maintain and improve one of the UK’s most famous landmarks.

“A huge amount of work has gone into the restoration of the lights and I am sure that visitors to this year’s extended Illuminations will be thrilled with the end result.”

The illumination season has been extended by two months this year and will run until January 3rd, 2021.

The Tower Eye has also extended its opening hours for the illuminations. Guests can book an evening slot to view the lights from 518ft in the sky. The Tower Eye will be open until 9.45 pm Friday and Saturday and until 7.45 pm on Sundays.

And for those really getting into the illuminations spirit, you can even hire the lights by the night, with a choice of colours and lettering running through the illuminated iconic heart on the front of the tower.

The switch-on comes as the famous Blackpool Tower Circus is now back open to guests following the easing of restrictions.

The much-loved circus, which features a host of international acts, including clown double act Mooky and Mr Boo, has put a series of social distancing measures in place, such as mandatory face coverings for guests, one-way systems and e-tickets only.

Also, back up and running is The Blackpool Tower Dungeons and the Tower Eye, offering families of all ages the chance to enjoy a fun-packed day out.

Kenny added: “It’s fantastic to be back to what is now our ‘new normal’, entertaining families of all ages in a safe way.

“We now cannot wait to show off our new look and act as a real beacon of light for Blackpool!”
