The Last Witch
A New Show
This February, The Amsterdam Dungeon invites you to a thrilling show. For a limited time, we open our doors to The Last Witch, a brand-new show based on the true story of Meynes Cornelis.
Loen Korenhof, an eccentric historian, welcomes you into her curious little home. She has devoted her entire life to researching the history of women. But recently, she has been tormented by visions, nightmares and ghostly apparitions of the last witch to be burned in the Netherlands, Meynes Cornelis.
What began as an intriguing investigation soon turns into a nightmare. Loen allows a group of strangers into her home and extinguishes all the lights, hoping the witch will choose someone else.
Do you dare to look the witch straight in the eye?
This temporary show runs until March 1st, 2026

True Story
In the 16th century, Meyns Cornelis worked as a maid in Amsterdam, when Purmerend was still known as Purmer. It is said that even as a young girl she was visited by cats that harassed and frightened her. But it did not end there. While working, Meyns heard a woman’s voice that no one else could hear, giving her sinister commands. When she refused to obey, she was punished. One night, a group of ghostly women suddenly stormed into her bedroom and assaulted her. This continued for years.
Meyns began to behave more and more strangely and was shunned by the community. Even a visit to a devil-binder brought no relief. Eventually, so many strange stories circulated about Meyns Cornelis and her alleged witchcraft that she was arrested by the sheriff of Amsterdam.
The magistrates passed their verdict: Meyns was to be burned at the stake “to dust and ashes” for harmful sorcery and her pact with the devil. On 27 February 1555, she was burned alive on Dam Square as one of the last witches in the Netherlands.
