Stortebeker's Execution
Stortebeker was a notorious pirate who sailed the seas in the 14th century. He and his crew of 70 comrades were caught and sentenced to death on the 20th October 1401.
The story of his execution has lived on through the centuries as legend. Stortebeker's last wish was to 'free anyone I manage to run past after loosing my head'. This bizarre request was granted by the councillors and, to the absolute astonishment of the watching crowds, after the beheading Stortebeker's headless body ran towards his comrades! He passed eleven men before being kicked to the ground by the executioner.
The councillors, however, did not keep their word and every one of Stortebeker's men were killed that day. The seemingly supernatural last stand of Stortebeker has tied a sense of awe with his name.
